Great Faith

When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! (Matthew 8: 10)

Most of the time, the Master made other people marvel. They marveled at His words. They marveled at His miracles. They marveled at His understanding. Yet, this is one of the few instances in scripture where someone actually made the Master marvel. It was the faith of a Roman centurion that made the Master marvel.

Jesus marveled at this man’s faith because he had only just met Him and yet, still believed. He hadn’t been in the faith for years. He hadn’t attended any new member’s classes. The first time he met Jesus, he had faith.

Then, the Master marveled because this man applied his faith to the healing of another person. He didn’t want anything for himself. It was for his servant that he exercised faith. Another reason the Master marveled may have been that this man’s faith was humble faith. “I am not worthy for you to come under my roof.” Finally, the faith of the man made the Master marvel because it was long distance faith. That’s faith which believes Jesus can heal with His word even over a long distance. The centurion said: “If you just speak the word, my servant will be healed.” Here’s a clue, if you want to do things that make people marvel, have great faith that makes the Master marvel.
