For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him – Matthew 2:2
The Wise Men in Matthew Chapter 2 were not at all embarrassed or ashamed to announce their agenda. Even though they stood before the Roman King, they boldly declared: “We are looking for Jesus and we came to worship Him.” One of the reasons why Jesus so desperately desires people to sincerely worship Him for Christmas is because that is so seldom what He gets.
People regularly come to Him by the millions, but they don’t come to worship Him. They come to church because they want to network. They came to the altar because they have a need. The come to the cross because they must be saved. They come to the throne of grace because they require both grace and mercy. Still, their agenda with Jesus has more to do with what He can do for them, than how freely and enthusiastically they can worship Him. Not so, with these Wise Men. They came to worship Him.
Imagine what church on Sunday would be like, if everyone came there to worship Him. It wouldn’t matter which robes the choir had on. It would be irrelevant how many people were in attendance. It would not be World War Three if someone sat in the wrong seat. It would be more than church service. It would be Christ’s worship. Now, imagine what Christmas would be like if everyone came to this season with worshiping Him as their number one agenda. There would be less decoration and more adoration. There would be less presents and more praise. There would be less jealousy and more joy. There would be less sadness and more celebration. O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!
