Still Waiting: Earthquake Relief in the Philippines

Relief efforts are mobilizing across the Philippines in response to last week’s devastating 6.9-magnitude earthquake in Cebu Province, but much of the aid remains concentrated in more accessible areas. While emergency supplies are arriving in cities like San Miguel and Bogo, thousands living in remote mountain villages are still waiting for help. Damaged roads, landslides, and sinkholes triggered by the quake and its aftershocks have made it extremely difficult—if not impossible—for aid workers to reach many isolated communities. Yet amid the crisis, hope is rising from within. Local pastors and believers, though lacking material resources, are stepping into the gap. These faithful men and women—deeply rooted in the very communities that are now hardest hit—are reaching survivors where larger organizations cannot. Their presence is making all the difference.

“There are churches up in the mountains that haven’t been reached yet because it’s so difficult to get there,” one local source shared. “But pastors are there. They’re praying with the people, encouraging them, staying present. They don’t have much, but they’re ministering with what they do have—the love of Christ.”

More than 500,000 people have been affected by the earthquake, and over 23,000 individuals have been displaced from their homes, either because of damage or ongoing safety risks. In Bogo City, officials have established a temporary tent city to shelter families who cannot return home. As the situation continues to unfold, there are critical needs that go beyond food, water, and shelter. Emotional and spiritual wounds are deep. Survivors are grieving losses, navigating trauma, and facing an uncertain future. In the midst of physical recovery, there is also an urgent call for spiritual care and long-term healing. Local churches are already preparing for this next phase. Plans for trauma-response outreach are underway, aiming to bring not only practical support but also emotional restoration and gospel hope.

Pray for the coordination of relief efforts so that aid reaches those in remote and cut-off areas swiftly and safely. Ask God to make a way through impassable roads and unstable terrain. Pray for the pastors and local church leaders who are ministering on the front lines. May they have wisdom, strength, and discernment as they offer comfort and guidance. Pray that their presence would bring peace and hope to those in distress. Pray for spiritual revival to take root in the midst of crisis. Ask the Lord to use this tragedy to turn hearts toward Him, both among survivors and those serving them. Pray for churches preparing for trauma care outreach during the recovery phase. May they be equipped to serve holistically, bringing lasting healing to body, mind, and soul.

In moments like these, the hands and feet of Christ often wear the faces of local believers—those who stay when others must leave, those who pray when resources run thin, and those who shine God’s light when darkness feels overwhelming. May we lift them up and stand with them in prayer and support.
