Supporting Kibera’s Youngest Learners

Supporting Kibera’s Youngest Learners

Kibera, located in Nairobi, Kenya, is one of Africa’s largest and most densely populated urban slums. Home to hundreds of thousands of residents, children in Kibera face extreme vulnerability due to widespread poverty, limited access to clean water, inadequate healthcare, and scarce opportunities for quality education. With few avenues for stable employment, families often struggle to provide essential nutrition and support for their children’s development, perpetuating cycles of hardship and limiting opportunities for a brighter future.

This project provides a vital alternative for children and families in Kibera, offering a safe, nurturing environment where young children can receive a strong foundation for life. Each year, 75 children benefit from early childhood education, two nutritious daily meals, and the care and attention of a dedicated teaching and support staff at our Nursery School. Here, children not only develop essential academic and social skills, but they also grow physically and emotionally, supported in an environment designed to foster their overall well-being.

Beyond the direct benefits to the children, the project also empowers parents and caregivers. By providing safe childcare and educational support, parents are freed to pursue employment and income-generating opportunities, helping families break the cycle of poverty. The program also addresses hunger directly, offering reliable meals and nutrition education to children and their families, while promoting local, sustainable solutions to food insecurity. Through this holistic approach—combining education, nutrition, and community support—the project equips children with the tools they need to thrive, strengthens families, and contributes to building a healthier, more resilient Kibera community.
