Bridging the Digital Divide for Haiti’s Youth

In Haiti, poverty continues to deny thousands of children and young people access to education and opportunity. Impoverished children between the ages of 5 and 14 account for the majority of the more than 1.3 million children who are either not enrolled in school or who drop out prematurely. As these children grow into young adulthood without foundational education or technological skills, they face significant barriers to employment and economic stability. In an increasingly digital world, the absence of computer literacy perpetuates the cycle of poverty, as knowledge and skills become ever more inaccessible. For many families living in extreme poverty, access to technology is viewed as an unattainable luxury rather than an essential tool for survival and advancement.

Providing access to digital learning environments offers a powerful pathway toward breaking this cycle. Through this project, digital computer labs are being established in the central and northeast regions of Haiti, each equipped with twelve laptops and essential accessories. These labs create safe, structured spaces where students can learn, practice, and apply critical technological skills. Qualified instructors, using up-to-date and relevant curricula, guide participants through hands-on training designed to meet the demands of today’s technology-driven industries and commerce.

Computer literacy is no longer optional—it is a foundational skill for communication, education, and economic participation. By developing technological knowledge and practical skills, students gain a competitive advantage that opens doors to continued education and employment opportunities. Access to digital learning helps reduce school dropout rates, increases college participation, and equips young people with viable skill sets that support long-term career pathways, empowering them to compete in a global economy and break cycles of poverty within their families and communities.

Ultimately, empowering Haitian youth with technological skills has far-reaching impact beyond the individual learner. As participants gain confidence and competence, they are better positioned to pursue sustainable careers, contribute to their communities, and participate in local, national, and global economies. By investing in digital education, this initiative addresses both immediate educational gaps and the long-term goal of poverty reduction—transforming technology from a distant luxury into a vital tool for hope, dignity, and opportunity.
