TEL International’s Library and Literacy Support Program is designed to spark a lifelong love of reading and improve academic performance among children in underserved rural communities across Ghana. Through this initiative, children will have access to a wide range of age-appropriate books that they can borrow and read at home—an opportunity that is rare in many of these communities. By encouraging reading beyond the classroom, this program will strengthen foundational literacy skills and help students perform better across all subjects in school.
In addition to establishing community libraries, the project will offer after-school literacy support to help bridge the learning gaps caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted formal education for millions of children worldwide. For many students, especially those in rural and marginalized areas, this disruption created lasting setbacks in reading proficiency and overall academic progress. By creating safe, supportive spaces for extra reading practice and guided instruction, TEL International aims to restore lost learning time and build student confidence.
Literacy is not just one subject among many—it is the foundation of all learning. Every subject in school, from science and social studies to even mathematics, depends on a student’s ability to read, comprehend, and apply information. Without strong literacy skills, children are less likely to succeed academically, advance to higher education, or break the cycle of poverty that holds back so many in rural areas.
This program is more than just a collection of books—it is an investment in the future of Ghana’s children. By placing books in their hands and offering structured support, we empower them to take ownership of their education, pursue higher learning, and build brighter futures for themselves, their families, and their communities. Together, we can turn the page on illiteracy and help millions of children in Ghana write a new chapter of opportunity and hope.
