CAMES provides free, quality education to more than 500 children in Liberia, many of whom were either repatriated from the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Ghana or internally displaced during Liberia’s prolonged civil wars. These children, having endured years of instability, displacement, and limited access to education, are now being given a renewed opportunity to learn, grow, and build a hopeful future.
Liberia continues to recover from the devastating effects of years of civil conflict that forced countless families to flee their homes. Thousands of Liberians spent much of their lives in refugee camps across neighboring countries, including Buduburam in Ghana. In that camp, a school was established by refugee Karrus Hayes with the support of American sponsor Cori Stern, offering displaced children a sense of normalcy and hope through education. As peace returned and repatriation efforts began, many families returned to Liberia—only to face the harsh reality that safe, accessible, and free educational opportunities were still limited.
Recognizing this urgent need, the Carolyn A. Miller School (CAMES) was established in Paynesville, Liberia, to ensure that returning refugees and vulnerable children in the surrounding communities would not be left behind. CAMES operates as a full K–12 school, welcoming students of all ages and backgrounds who are eager to learn despite past hardships. The school also has a forward-looking vision that includes the development of a community college, adult literacy programs, and scholarship opportunities to support lifelong learning and economic empowerment.
Looking ahead, CAMES aims to expand its impact even further by developing a co-educational boarding school and a self-sustaining learning environment for up to 850 minors in Suakoko, Liberia. This long-term vision is designed to provide not only education, but also stability, safety, and holistic support—helping to break cycles of poverty and displacement while nurturing the next generation of Liberian leaders.
Through education, CAMES remains committed to restoring dignity, rebuilding communities, and offering lasting hope to children and families who have already endured far too much.
