In Uganda, alarming statistics reveal that 54% of women aged 20 to 24 were married by 18, and 12% were married by just 15. In districts like Kabarole and Butaleja, many parents marry off their daughters for financial gain, sacrificing their children’s futures. Child marriage not only ends a girl’s childhood but also limits her education, increases the risk of domestic violence, and leads to early and risky pregnancies. The cycle of poverty continues, as these girls often lack education and economic opportunities. To combat this issue, we are implementing a comprehensive initiative that focuses on:
1). Education and Awareness: Conducting training and community dialogues to help families understand the risks and negative impacts of child marriage.
2). Local Leadership Engagement: Assisting community leaders in developing action plans to prevent child marriages.
3). Income Generation Skills: Equipping parents with skills to create sustainable income, along with providing incentives, such as one goat for each vulnerable girl’s family, to encourage them to keep their daughters in school.
4). Essential Supplies: Providing girls with scholastic materials and sanitary towels to support their education.
This project aims to delay marriage for at least 3,000 girls and help the government develop supportive policies that allocate resources to enhance health, education, and economic opportunities for both married girls and those at risk of early marriage. By raising awareness of their rights and empowering young people through capacity-building and entrepreneurship programs, we can reduce poverty and improve futures for these girls. Join us in this vital mission to empower girls and create a brighter future for Uganda! Your support can make a real difference.
