In Embu County, Kenya, a transformative initiative is bringing reliable access to clean, fresh water for 2,500 children across eight rural schools—dramatically improving health, education, and food security for less than ten pounds per child. In a region where piped water is available for only an hour a day—and often unaffordable for struggling families—schools have long depended on unpredictable rainwater and unsafe local streams. This has forced children to spend hours collecting water, often going without adequate meals, and missing valuable class time. The consequences are severe: hunger, exhaustion, and exposure to waterborne diseases, all of which hinder students’ ability to learn and thrive.

To address this crisis, locally led teams will dig wells at each school using regionally sourced equipment and materials. These wells will provide a stable water supply for drinking, sanitation, and crop irrigation. With access to water, schools can grow their own food to feed students—especially those from the most vulnerable households. A pilot borewell has already been successfully completed on time and within budget, proving the project’s practicality and sustainability.
