In Northern Nigeria there is both the deep spiritual and physical needs of the region, as well as the amazing way God is working even in such dire circumstances. The contrast between the extreme poverty and the spiritual darkness of the area, and the powerful movement of God, is striking. It’s almost as if the poverty and suffering of the people provide a stark backdrop for the light of the Gospel to shine all the brighter.
What stands out is the sense of depravity—the desperation and daily struggles the people face, from basic necessities to surviving drought conditions. Yet, in the midst of this, God’s presence is being felt in ways that transcend the material poverty. It’s as though God is using the physical need as an entry point for the deeper, spiritual transformation He desires for these communities. Despite the overwhelming challenges, the fact that God is moving in power in such a place is a testimony to the hope that only He can bring. The Gospel has always flourished in places of hardship, where people recognize their deep need for salvation. It’s a reminder that, while the world may see a hopeless situation, God sees an opportunity to demonstrate His glory, grace, and power.
The story of God moving in such a spiritually resistant area brings to mind the words from 2 Corinthians 12:9: “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'” It’s encouraging to see how even in the most difficult environments, God’s power and grace are more than enough.
