Haiti in Crisis: Children Trapped in Gang Violence

A recent United Nations report paints a grim picture of the growing humanitarian crisis in Haiti—especially for its youngest citizens. Children now make up nearly half of gang membership in the country. Recruited—or forced—into these violent groups, they are being used as couriers, lookouts, and porters, and in some heartbreaking cases, exploited for domestic labor or even forced into combat roles. These children are not just victims of poverty and instability—they are caught in a cycle of fear, trauma, and violence with few safe ways out.

This crisis is unfolding in a nation already overwhelmed. An estimated 90% of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, is under the control or influence of armed gangs, according to earlier UN assessments. The result has been catastrophic: roads are blocked, public services are nearly nonexistent, basic supplies have become unaffordable, and thousands of families are fleeing their homes in search of safety and stability.

Yet in the midst of this darkness, TEL International is actively working to be a light. Partnering with trusted in-country leaders and staff, we are listening, learning, and taking action to meet the emotional, spiritual, and educational needs of the Haitian people—especially children and families who are most vulnerable. Our mission is clear: to reach families with the gospel of Jesus Christ. In a nation plagued by fear and instability, we believe true and lasting hope is found not only in physical relief but in the transformation that comes through faith. We are committed to equipping local leaders to bring that hope into their communities—through prayer, through education, through practical support, and through the message of Christ’s love.

As Haiti continues to face unimaginable challenges, we ask you to join us in prayer and support. These children are more than statistics—they are sons and daughters, future leaders, and precious souls loved by God.
