Sustaining Life in Darfur: Clean Water, Brighter Futures

Imagine being just nine years old, living in a village where every day is defined by the struggle to survive. Instead of attending school, you must walk for seven grueling hours across scorching sand to fetch water for yourself and your younger siblings. Your throat is parched, fear creeps in—what if you get lost in a sandstorm?—and once you reach the handpump, you face a long queue of other villagers waiting for the same precious resource. Finally, your journey back begins, now burdened with a heavy jerrycan full of water. This is the daily reality for countless children in Darfur. Though clean water exists underground, it lies too deep to dig for, and without access to a pump in the village, life is a constant struggle for survival.

Kids for Kids is the only charity wholly dedicated to supporting the children of Darfur, and their impact has been transformative. To date, they have adopted 110 villages, assisting over 590,000 people through grassroots, hands-on initiatives. Among their most vital projects is the installation of clean water handpumps in areas where other charities cannot or will not operate. These handpumps are carefully fenced to keep animals away, ensuring the water remains clean, and a trough is provided outside the fence so that livestock can also drink safely. Water carts and jerrycans are supplied to help families store and transport water efficiently.

Sustainability is at the heart of Kids for Kids’ work. They train village committees, establish local funding mechanisms, and teach communities how to maintain and repair pumps so that access to water continues long after the initial installation. The results are life-changing: children no longer spend their days walking for water and can attend school, opening the door to education, opportunity, and hope. Families gain the ability to plant trees, grow vegetables, and break free from cycles of starvation and poverty. By providing clean water, Kids for Kids empowers communities to thrive, creating lasting, sustainable change that transforms futures one village at a time, improves health outcomes, increases school attendance, fosters economic growth, and instills hope and resilience for generations to come.
