In the rural parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, access to clean water can mean the difference between health and disease, hope and hardship. Water wells that tap into deep, clean aquifers are vital lifelines for these communities, offering a safe alternative to contaminated surface water often collected from muddy pools shared with livestock. Unfortunately, many of these wells—though originally well-built—have fallen into disrepair due to a lack of ongoing maintenance and resources. Without the funds to fix broken pumps or the support systems to manage the wells, families are forced back to walking miles every day to collect unsafe water. The burden of this task falls mostly on women and children, whose time and energy are consumed by the daily struggle for water.
Restoring these wells is not a complex task—it’s often a matter of replacing worn-out pump hardware—but the impact is profound. With functioning wells, communities regain access to one of the most basic human rights: clean, safe water. Health improves almost immediately as families no longer rely on contaminated sources that spread dangerous diseases like cholera. What’s more, the time once spent fetching water can now be used productively. Women gain the freedom to pursue small businesses or take on new roles within their communities, while children—especially girls—can attend school regularly, setting the stage for a brighter future.
TEL International is committed to restoring these vital water sources. Through this initiative, funds will go directly toward replacing broken parts with durable pumps and pipes, breathing new life into wells that are already in place but no longer functional. But the effort doesn’t stop there. Communities will be supported in creating Water User Committees responsible for managing their water supply, collecting small user fees, and maintaining a dedicated fund for future repairs. Women are required to serve on these committees, ensuring they have a voice in how water—this essential resource—is governed and protected. Their involvement not only promotes gender equity but also brings valuable insights into the daily water needs of households, strengthening community decision-making and fostering long-term sustainability of the water source. This is a simple, sustainable solution with far-reaching consequences. Clean water transforms lives. It improves public health, lifts economic burdens, empowers women, and opens doors for the next generation.
