This Nakuru Safehouse is dedicated to transforming the lives of Kenyan women—particularly young, single mothers—by equipping them with the tools and training they need to become self-sufficient and provide for their families. Many of these women are currently living in extreme poverty, struggling each day to meet even the most basic needs like food, shelter, and education for their children. Through a comprehensive, one-year vocational training program in tailoring, the project offers them a pathway out of poverty and into sustainable livelihoods.
In Kenya, approximately 44% of the female population lives below the international poverty line of $1.25 per day. The economic hardship many women face pushes them toward desperate measures, including exploitative or dehumanizing work, simply to feed their children. This program offers a dignified alternative by empowering women in rural villages with practical, income-generating skills. Beyond the ability to earn a living, the training also reduces the pressure to marry off daughters at a young age, helping break cycles of generational poverty and inequality. When a woman gains economic independence, she is more likely to keep her children in school and make decisions that prioritize their long-term well-being.
The women enrolled in this program reside at a dedicated facility in Nakuru at no cost. While living there, they attend a 12-month vocational training school on-site, where they learn tailoring and sewing skills along with foundational business practices and essential lessons in healthy lifestyle choices. This well-rounded approach not only prepares them to launch their own small tailoring businesses but also supports their overall personal growth and self-reliance. With the income they generate from their skills, they can afford food, education, and other necessities for their families, improving their quality of life.
In addition to technical training, the women participate in professional development workshops that reinforce their confidence and prepare them for a more stable, secure future. The knowledge and experience they gain allow them to stand on their own, both economically and socially. As they succeed, the impact of their progress extends beyond themselves to their children and communities. Their ability to provide for their families’ health, education, and daily needs contributes to broader efforts to uplift entire regions out of poverty. Ultimately, this project is not just about teaching a trade—it’s about restoring dignity, fostering independence, and unlocking the potential of women who have been marginalized for too long. By investing in these women, the program creates ripple effects of transformation that reach across generations.
