A Community-Based Approach to Maternal Health in Ghana

A Community-Based Approach to Maternal Health in Ghana

Access to maternal and reproductive health services remains a significant challenge for expectant mothers from low-income households in Ghana. Many of these women face numerous barriers, including limited access to quality care, lack of transportation, financial constraints, and minimal education on pregnancy and childbirth. These factors contribute to Ghana’s high rates of maternal and infant mortality, which disproportionately affect the most vulnerable communities. In response to these ongoing challenges, African Health Now (AHN), in collaboration with the Madina Polyclinic, is launching the Pregnancy School Program Initiative—an innovative and community-centered approach designed to directly support at least 200 expectant mothers in navigating a healthy and safe pregnancy.

The Pregnancy School Program seeks to bridge the widening gap in maternal healthcare access by providing holistic and culturally appropriate support. Through this initiative, women will participate in structured group education sessions that provide essential knowledge on topics critical to a healthy pregnancy. These sessions include in-depth guidance on pregnancy and fetal development, breastfeeding techniques, nutritious meal planning for mother and baby, postpartum recovery, family planning, and the safe use of contraceptives. Beyond education, the program also includes referral and linkage services that connect participants to trusted local healthcare providers, ensuring they can access prenatal and postnatal care when needed.

At the conclusion of the program, every participant will receive AHN’s Maternity Go-Box—a comprehensive care package filled with newborn essentials such as baby clothes, blankets, hygiene products, and postpartum supplies for mothers. This box is more than a gift; it represents dignity, preparedness, and tangible support at a time when many women have very little. It helps reduce the stress and financial burden of preparing for childbirth and supports the mother and baby’s health in those critical first weeks of life.

Ultimately, the Pregnancy School Program aims to empower women with the tools, knowledge, and resources needed not only to survive pregnancy and childbirth but to thrive. By improving maternal health literacy, enhancing access to services, and providing critical postpartum support, the initiative works to significantly reduce preventable deaths and complications. Informed mothers are more likely to attend antenatal visits, practice healthy behaviors, and seek timely care for themselves and their infants. The ripple effects are far-reaching—healthier mothers raise healthier children, and stronger families contribute to more resilient communities. These empowered women are more likely to invest in their children’s education, advocate for better healthcare, and participate in local leadership, creating a cycle of growth and stability that benefits generations to come.

This initiative reflects AHN’s commitment to ensuring that no woman is left behind simply because of where she lives or how much she earns. Through collaborative, grassroots efforts like the Pregnancy School Program, we are planting the seeds for long-term change—building a future where every mother has the opportunity to experience a safe pregnancy, a healthy delivery, and the joy of raising a thriving child.
