India’s New Anti Conversion Ordinance

India’s New Anti Conversion Ordinance

The government in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has approved a bill to prevent “forceful” religious conversions. A legislation critics say is aimed at curbing interfaith marriages.

The Indian state of Madhya Pradesh recently passed a new anti-conversion ordinance making it illegal to force someone to change their religion. The Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Ordinance 2020 replaces an older one in the state. The new ordinance is arguably considered by lawmakers to be the strictest anti-conversion measure in India. For example, anyone who wants to change their religious affiliation must now apply to the district administration 60 days in advance. Failing to do so will incur heavy fines and jail time. The new ordinance will remain in effect for six months. If confirmed by the Madhya Pradesh State Legislature once back in session, the ordinance will become law.

Anti-conversion laws are on the rise as the Bharatiya Janata Party pushes to make India a Hindu nation. The Madhya Pradesh government’s move came almost a month after a similar law was passed by India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh. Two Christians have been arrested since the law went into effect. The concern of the local church is how long will it be until Christians are arrested in Madhya Pradesh?

There are real challenges ahead for TEL International and its partner churches. Pray that God’s Word will spread rapidly and freely, and that the local church would be strengthened to continue on in the face of opposition or difficulties. Just as Aaron and Hur supported Moses’ arms in the battle against the Amalekites (Exodus 17:12), you can strengthen the arms of our missionaries by supporting them through your prayers.
