In rural Sierra Leone, orphanages often operate with minimal resources and little external support. Yet, many children living in these institutions—having lost or been separated from their parents—could be reunited with family members if they could be located. In a family environment, children have the opportunity to grow up well-nourished, educated, healthy, and emotionally supported. Unfortunately, widespread misconceptions persist: many adults believe that orphans automatically belong to the government and that families have no right to reclaim them. This misunderstanding leaves thousands of children confined to orphanages where they often lack the individualized attention and care that only a committed family can provide.

Research and experience consistently show that societies flourish when children are raised in families and supported by engaged, nurturing communities. Recognizing this, Kidsave works to locate and reunite children with their families, while also equipping entire villages with knowledge about children’s rights. Their programs provide practical support to heads of households—most often women—through microloans, skills training, and ongoing guidance to ensure families can adequately care for their children. Beyond reunification, Kidsave monitors children’s well-being, ensuring they attend school, receive proper nutrition, and remain healthy and happy. These efforts strengthen communities, restore children’s confidence and sense of value, and cultivate hope for the future, while fostering resilience, encouraging education, and empowering families to break cycles of poverty and instability.
