In Africa, students begin learning all subjects in English from the very first day of primary school. While this policy aims to equip pupils with essential language skills for the future, many teachers struggle because English is their second language. This gap limits their ability to deliver a quality education, leaving students at risk of falling behind. In Tanzania, the challenge is slightly different: pupils begin learning English in year three of primary school, and instruction in English across all subjects starts only in secondary school. Even so, many primary school teachers face difficulties teaching English effectively, which can hinder student progress and confidence, limit opportunities for higher education, and reduce the ability of students to compete in an increasingly globalized world.
To address these challenges, our partner organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa provide targeted classroom support focused on the teaching and learning of English. Central to this approach is teacher-to-teacher training, where experienced educators mentor local teachers using custom-designed instructional books. These materials include clear explanations and instructions in the teachers’ native languages, ensuring understanding while building confidence and competence. Teaching teachers English is transformative: equipping them with language skills and effective methods directly improves the learning experience for hundreds of children in each classroom, fosters a love of learning, and lays the foundation for long-term academic success and personal growth.
The impact of high-quality teacher training cannot be overstated. A single well-trained teacher has the potential to influence thousands of children, opening doors to literacy, critical thinking, and future opportunities. Basic education is foundational to lasting social and economic development, and empowering teachers is the most strategic way to create generational change.
To date, our programs have enhanced the education of hundreds of primary school teachers and positively affected the lives of thousands of pupils in Sub-Saharan Africa. By strengthening teachers’ skills, we provide students with the tools they need to thrive academically and socially. Education, especially the mastery of English, serves as a passport to self-sustaining livelihoods, improved community outcomes, and broader opportunities for the next generation.
By investing in teachers today, we are building the leaders, innovators, and professionals of tomorrow, ensuring that every child has a chance to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to their communities and countries.
