Although most of Jesus’ earthly ministry was focused on the Jewish people, it is clear throughout the Gospels that His heart extended far beyond Israel. Jesus came with a deep concern for the salvation of all people and a mission that ultimately reaches every nation, tribe, language, and people.
His ministry began among the Jews because they were the people through whom God had promised to bring His redemptive plan to the world. Yet Jesus repeatedly demonstrated that God’s love and saving purposes were not limited to one ethnic group or nation. He ministered to outsiders, welcomed those who were often rejected by society, healed Gentiles, and commended the faith of people who were considered foreigners.
Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman is one powerful example. Instead of allowing cultural and religious barriers to prevent Him from engaging her, Jesus spoke with her, revealed the truth to her, and offered her the gift of living water. Her response ultimately led others in her community to encounter Christ for themselves. Likewise, Jesus responded to the faith of the Roman centurion and demonstrated that genuine faith could be found beyond the boundaries of Israel. Throughout His ministry, Jesus was preparing His followers to understand that the Gospel was never intended to remain within the borders of one nation. His final command made this mission unmistakable: His disciples were to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations.
The Great Commission, therefore, is not a new idea introduced after Jesus’ resurrection. It is the continuation of the mission and heart of Christ. He came to seek and save the lost, and His desire was that people everywhere would come to know God, experience forgiveness, and receive eternal life through Him.
As followers of Christ, we must share His heart for the nations. Our mission is not restricted by geography, culture, language, ethnicity, or social status. Every person matters to God, and every nation deserves the opportunity to hear the Gospel.
The Church is called to carry the message of Christ beyond its own walls and comfort zones—to cross borders, build relationships, serve communities, proclaim the Gospel, and make disciples. When we engage in missions, we participate in the continuing work of Christ to bring the hope of salvation to the nations. Jesus came through one nation, ministered primarily among one people, but gave His life for the whole world. His mission is our mission: to make disciples of all nations and proclaim the good news of salvation to everyone.
