Africa is home to millions of children who have been orphaned, abandoned, or separated from their families. In Kenya, as throughout much of Africa, children and young people represent a significant portion of the population. Many grow up facing poverty, displacement, neglect, and limited opportunities. Although their circumstances can leave them feeling disillusioned and forgotten, these children still possess tremendous potential, dreams, and hope for a better future.
The Children and Youth Empowerment Center exists to help vulnerable children and young people discover that potential and build lives of dignity, purpose, and opportunity. Through residential care, education, skills development, and holistic support, the Center serves children beginning as young as six years old and continues working with them through young adulthood.
The goal is not simply to provide children with a safe place to live. It is to equip them with the knowledge, skills, confidence, and support they need to become healthy, independent, and productive members of their communities.
The Center takes a holistic approach to child development. Programs include access to a medical clinic, psychosocial support, academic education, vocational training, entrepreneurship education, and life-skills development. Children are also encouraged to participate in activities such as sports, the arts, and a nature club. These opportunities allow young people to discover their abilities, develop healthy relationships, build self-confidence, and experience the joy of simply being children. They also provide a safe and supportive environment where children can explore their interests, learn from their experiences, develop leadership skills, and discover that their circumstances do not have to determine their future. Through encouragement, mentorship, and positive experiences, they can begin to see themselves not as victims of their past, but as individuals with God-given gifts, purpose, and tremendous potential.
Education is at the heart of long-term empowerment. Academic and vocational programs help young people develop practical skills that can lead to employment, entrepreneurship, and economic independence. Gender-sensitive training ensures that both boys and girls are equipped to understand their value, recognize opportunities, and make informed decisions about their futures.
Particular attention is given to empowering girls. When a girl receives an education and learns the skills necessary to become economically independent, the impact extends far beyond her individual life. Educated and empowered girls are better positioned to provide for their future families, make healthy decisions, participate in their communities, and contribute to economic development. Investing in a girl today can help transform an entire family and influence generations to come. The Center also recognizes that sustainable change requires more than the efforts of one organization. It collaborates with civic organizations, universities, private-sector partners, and other community stakeholders to develop effective and sustainable models for caring for and educating street-dwelling and vulnerable children.
These partnerships help identify innovative and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing vulnerable young people while creating opportunities for education, employment, healthcare, and community integration. By bringing together organizations, businesses, educators, healthcare professionals, and community leaders, the Centre can address the complex needs of children from multiple perspectives and provide more comprehensive support. These collaborative efforts also help ensure that children receive the tools, guidance, and encouragement they need at each stage of their development. The ultimate goal is to help children move from surviving difficult circumstances to building healthy, productive, and meaningful lives. By investing in their education, well-being, and future, we are helping them discover their God-given potential and giving them the opportunity to become confident, self-sufficient adults who can positively influence their families and communities.
