TEL International is dedicated to creating a safe, stable, and nurturing residential environment for 150 former street-dwelling children in Kenya, where they can heal, learn, and thrive. This comprehensive program integrates access to quality education, essential medical care, psychosocial support, and structured life skills and vocational-entrepreneurship training, all designed to equip each child with the tools needed for a successful and independent future.
Emphasis is placed on gender sensitivity and inclusion to ensure that both boys and girls fully benefit from the program. Safe spaces are provided where participants can explore topics such as healthy relationships, self-esteem, personal development, and gender equity. These sessions are designed to foster mutual respect, emotional intelligence, and positive identity formation, ensuring that every child is empowered to reach their full potential, while also building resilience, strengthening decision-making skills, and equipping them to navigate relationships and life challenges with confidence and integrity.
Across Africa, an estimated 50 million children are orphaned or abandoned, and in Kenya, children represent more than half of the population. Many of these children face severe hardship, exclusion, and uncertainty about their future. Yet, despite these challenges, they also carry immense potential. Through structured residential care and holistic education, this initiative supports children ranging from early childhood through young adulthood, guiding them toward stability, purpose, and long-term self-sufficiency.
The program offers a wide range of supportive services, including a medical clinic that provides essential healthcare, psychosocial counseling to address trauma and emotional needs, and enrichment activities such as sports, arts, and environmental education through a nature club. In addition to academic instruction, the Children and Youth Empowerment Center provides practical vocational training and entrepreneurship education, ensuring that young people are prepared for real-world opportunities and economic independence.
By integrating gender-sensitive empowerment into all aspects of learning, the program recognizes that investing in girls’ education and leadership has far-reaching benefits—not only for the individual, but also for future families and society as a whole. Empowered girls are more likely to become healthy, educated women who contribute positively to their communities and break cycles of poverty.
