Beautification and Greening of Schools in Kenya

The Mabati Technical Training Institute is planning to harvest and store rainwater during the upcoming rainy season this month to store over 1,500,000 liters of water. The dam measuring 1059 cubic meters if repaired with High-density polyethylene (HDPE), can last between 10 to 30 years and supply enough water to irrigate the garden, produce vegetables to support the feeding program and to educate our youth on the importance of environmental conservation and tree planting.

Climate change has caused increase in carbon dioxide emission in the environment due deforestation and industrial activities. Destruction of forests for charcoal burning for fuel has increased in Kilifi. This has resulted in erratic rainfall patterns and drought. Families depending on rain- fed crops are now experiencing poor agricultural production, and food insecurity. Many have lost their livelihoods and are unable to provide basic needs for their children.

Creating awareness and training of children on environmental conservation will enable them to take action by growing and protecting trees to increase forest cover. Children will be taught to plant and nurture the trees to restore the degraded land and train the rest of the community on effective environmental conservation and the importance of trees in supporting agricultural activities. This project will educate over 30,000 children in Kilifi County, allowing them to understand the importance afforestation.
