In Uganda, only about 30% of girls are enrolled in secondary school, with even lower rates in rural areas where systemic barriers prevent many girls from accessing education. Factors such as early marriage, teenage pregnancy, societal undervaluing of girls’ education, and a lack of women teachers contribute to high dropout rates and limited school attendance. The presence of women teachers is particularly critical, as they serve as role models, mentors, and advocates for girls, helping to create supportive environments that encourage continued learning. Expanding the number of qualified women teachers in rural communities is a powerful strategy to improve educational access and outcomes for thousands of girls.
Currently, less than 30% of secondary school teachers in Uganda are women. By increasing the number of trained and qualified female educators, this project aims to enhance the quality of secondary education for all students, while specifically supporting girls’ enrollment, retention, and completion. Women teachers not only provide academic instruction but also offer guidance, encouragement, and inspiration, showing girls that pursuing education is both possible and valuable. Their influence extends beyond the classroom, fostering community support for girls’ education and challenging cultural norms that have historically limited educational opportunities for young women.
The long-term impact of this initiative is profound. Educated girls and young women are better equipped to participate meaningfully in society, make informed decisions about their health and families, and contribute to the economic and social development of their communities. Children of educated women are healthier, more likely to attend school, and benefit from a cycle of learning and opportunity that extends across generations. By investing in female teachers in rural Uganda, this project not only empowers individual girls but also lays the foundation for sustainable social change, breaking cycles of poverty and inequality and building a brighter future for communities throughout the country.
