In rural communities throughout the Dominican Republic, many children face daily challenges that threaten both their health and their future. More than half of children living in these areas suffer from chronic malnutrition, while over two-thirds leave school before completing the fifth grade. Poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to educational resources combine to create a cycle that is difficult for families to escape. Without proper nutrition, children often struggle to concentrate, develop physically, and perform well academically. At the same time, limited education reduces future opportunities, increasing the likelihood that poverty will continue from one generation to the next.
TEL International is committed to confronting these challenges by providing nutritious daily school lunches to 1,200 students attending six primary schools in rural Dominican Republic communities. The program focuses on areas where children are especially vulnerable to hunger, poverty, and educational disadvantage. By ensuring that students receive healthy, balanced meals each school day, the initiative seeks to strengthen both child nutrition and school participation, helping children remain healthy, attentive in the classroom, and consistently engaged in their education.
For many families, the promise of a reliable meal at school serves as a powerful motivation to keep their children enrolled and attending classes consistently. In communities where resources are scarce, children are sometimes forced to stay home or leave school early to help support their families. The school lunch program helps ease this burden by giving parents confidence that their children will receive at least one nutritious meal each day. As attendance improves, dropout rates decrease, opening the door for children to continue their education and pursue brighter futures.
The impact of the program extends beyond the classroom. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and other food supplies are purchased from local farmers whenever possible, creating an important source of income for families within the surrounding communities. This approach not only supports local agriculture and strengthens the rural economy, but also encourages long-term community sustainability. By connecting schools with local producers, the project creates a cycle of mutual support that benefits both children and their families.
The school lunch program serves as a critical safety net for vulnerable children. Proper nutrition during childhood is essential for healthy physical growth, brain development, immune system strength, and emotional well-being. Children who receive nutritious meals are better able to concentrate, participate in class, and retain information. Instead of being distracted by hunger, they can focus on learning, building friendships, and developing the skills needed for future success, allowing them to grow academically, socially, and emotionally in a healthy and supportive environment.
Education and nutrition are deeply connected. A child who is healthy is more prepared to learn, and a child who receives a quality education is better equipped to overcome poverty. Through this initiative, children are given more than just meals—they are given hope, opportunity, and the chance to build a better future for themselves and their communities. By investing in both nourishment and education, this program helps empower the next generation to break free from the cycle of poverty and pursue lives filled with greater possibility and purpose.
