Clean Water for Life: Soweto-Kayole Project

TEL International, in partnership with key stakeholders, is committed to funding a vital water project aimed at improving access to safe and reliable drinking water in the Soweto-Kayole community of Nairobi, Kenya. This initiative will focus on the purification, rehabilitation, and sustainable maintenance of an already drilled borehole, ensuring a consistent water supply for more than 500 households and over 400 pupils in nearby schools. The project is designed to address one of the most pressing basic needs in the community—access to clean and safe water for drinking, cooking, and daily domestic use.

Soweto-Kayole, a densely populated informal settlement with over 60,000 residents, remains one of the most underserved areas within Nairobi. Despite its long-standing existence since independence, the community has never had access to a reliable piped water system. As a result, residents have been forced to rely on unsafe water sources, significantly increasing the prevalence of waterborne diseases and contributing to preventable illnesses and deaths, particularly among children, while also placing additional financial strain on already vulnerable households due to repeated medical expenses and reducing overall productivity within the community.

This project seeks to directly address these challenges by ensuring that clean, purified water is made readily available both at household level and within local schools. By improving water access for pupils, the initiative will also support better learning conditions, including the availability of water for drinking and cooking, thereby enhancing overall school health and attendance.

Beyond improving access, the project will play a crucial role in strengthening sanitation and public health within the wider community. Reliable clean water supply will significantly reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, improve hygiene practices, and contribute to a healthier living environment for thousands of residents. Additionally, the availability of piped or nearby water access will dramatically reduce the time and physical burden—often borne by women and children—associated with traveling long distances to fetch water. Ultimately, this initiative will ensure that over 500 households and 400 pupils benefit from a dependable daily supply of clean water, leading to improved health outcomes, reduced mortality rates, and enhanced quality of life across the community.
