Haiti Braces for Riots Amid Starvation

Haiti prepares for country-wide protest as opposition leaders call on the current president, Jovenel Moïse, to step down. Some are concerned he is trying to amass too much power, and want elections for a new parliament.

Moïse’s term is ending, but he claims he has one more year due to the chaos of the last election that prevented him from taking office several months into his first term. During his time in office, he has been accused of embezzlement and fraud.

Hunger is driving much of the unrest and the Haitian people are exclusively blaming Moïse’s for what’s going on. Thus resulting in a major push to remove him from office, however Moïse’s says his term’s not up, and he’s not leaving. So it’s kind of a standoff. The difference with Haiti is that they pre-plan and get approval for their riots. Port-au-Prince was scheduled to explode in February, but some believe that protest may come sooner than planned.

Many desperate and hungry Haitians have resorted to kidnapping to get ransom money to buy food. Anyone not begging for food are being targeted with the hopes that their families can exchange food as a ransom to get them back. The situation is dire; children as young as five are on the streets begging for food or money to get food. And you’ve got teenagers and young adults kidnapping those who have means.
