TEL International’s Agribusiness Initiative is a sustainable social enterprise designed to strengthen rural economies and improve the livelihoods of farming households throughout Uganda. By empowering smallholder farmers with the resources, training, and financial support they need to succeed, we are helping communities build lasting economic stability while enhancing food security for future generations.
At the heart of this initiative is the formation of village-based agricultural cooperatives. Through these cooperatives, farmers gain access to revolving credit, quality farm inputs, agricultural training, and post-harvest support services. More than 80 percent of our program budget is invested directly into these farmer-centered services, ensuring that resources reach the individuals and families who need them most.
These cooperative networks enable farmers to increase productivity, improve crop quality, and adapt to the growing challenges posed by climate change. By working together, farmers are also able to access larger markets, negotiate better prices for their products, and increase household income. This collective approach strengthens entire communities while reducing the vulnerability of individual farmers.
The rural regions of Sub-Saharan Africa are heavily dependent on agriculture, with approximately 70 percent of residents engaged in subsistence farming. For many families, farming is not only a source of income but also the primary means of providing food, education, and healthcare for their households. However, changing weather patterns, prolonged droughts, and disruptions in agricultural supply chains have placed tremendous pressure on these communities.
Smallholder farmers often lack access to crop insurance, reliable buyers, modern irrigation systems, and affordable financing. As a result, many families invest significant time and labor into their farms without the assurance of a stable harvest or a profitable market for their produce.
Establishing and strengthening village cooperatives is essential to revitalizing these rural economies. Through cooperative ownership and shared resources, farmers can access the tools, training, and support necessary to rebuild their businesses and create sustainable sources of income. These cooperatives foster self-reliance, encourage responsible stewardship, and provide a pathway toward long-term economic independence.
By investing in rural farmers today, we are helping create stronger families, healthier communities, and a more secure future. Through access to credit, agricultural inputs, post-harvest services, and market opportunities, smallholder farmers are gaining the ability to provide for their families, contribute to local economic growth, and build resilience against future challenges. Together, we can help transform subsistence farming into sustainable prosperity—one family, one cooperative, and one community at a time.
