TEL International, in partnership with key stakeholders, is committed to improving the health and well-being of orphaned and vulnerable children by providing access to essential healthcare services, including medical screenings, routine immunizations, and counseling on HIV/AIDS prevention—services that address some of the most critical and urgent needs in underserved communities.
At the heart of this initiative is the Wellness Wagon, a brightly colored mobile clinic designed to reach children in some of the most remote and impoverished rural areas of South Africa. This mobile healthcare unit brings vital medical services directly to communities that lack access to clinics, hospitals, and trained medical professionals. Through regular outreach visits, the Wellness Wagon ensures that children receive comprehensive care that supports their physical, mental, and social development, while also enabling early detection and treatment of illnesses, promoting preventive healthcare practices, and strengthening overall community health outcomes.
In South Africa, more than half of all children live below the global poverty line, leaving them highly vulnerable to preventable illnesses such as diarrhea, malnutrition, tuberculosis (TB), and other treatable conditions. Many of these deaths occur simply because families do not have access to basic healthcare services or early intervention. This program seeks to change that reality by delivering life-saving care directly to those who need it most.
The Wellness Program is designed to strengthen community health systems while prioritizing the needs of vulnerable children. Its services include HIV and TB testing, antiretroviral treatment support, immunizations, first aid, and health education focused on disease prevention and overall wellness. By combining treatment with education, the program empowers communities with the knowledge needed to protect and sustain long-term health.
In collaboration with 33 community-based organizations across the country, this program currently reaches over 11,000 children and has been actively engaged in this work for more than a decade. Through funding, skills development, and capacity-building support, local partners are equipped to deliver consistent, high-quality care that is both accessible and sustainable.
Ultimately, this initiative is rooted in the belief that a community’s strength is directly tied to the health of its children. By investing in mobile healthcare and community-based support systems, TEL International and its partners are helping to reduce preventable deaths, improve quality of life, and build a healthier, more resilient future for vulnerable children across South Africa.
