There are people all around the world—and perhaps even around the block from us—who are searching for truth, longing for hope, and hungering and thirsting after righteousness. Some may live in places where the Gospel has never been clearly proclaimed, while others may live in our own communities and neighborhoods, quietly searching for meaning and a relationship with God.
Jesus reminds us in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” This reminds us that God is already at work in the hearts of people who are searching for Him. Their spiritual hunger may be expressed through questions, struggles, a desire for purpose, or a longing for something deeper than what the world can provide. As believers, we have the privilege and responsibility of praying for these individuals. We should pray not only for those who are searching but also for the missionaries, pastors, evangelists, and national believers whom God has positioned to reach them. Around the world, faithful Christians are serving in difficult and sometimes dangerous places, sharing the Gospel, discipling new believers, planting churches, and demonstrating the love of Christ through practical acts of service.
National believers are especially important to this mission. Many understand the language, culture, customs, and challenges of their communities in ways that enable them to build meaningful relationships and communicate the Gospel effectively. God can use these believers as bridges between the Gospel and people who are searching for truth. We should also remember that missions is not only about people who live thousands of miles away. There are people within our own neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, families, and communities who are spiritually hungry. They may be closer to us than we realize. Sometimes fulfilling the Great Commission begins with simply noticing the people God has already placed around us.
Take time to pray intentionally for the nations. Pray for unreached people groups. Pray for missionaries and national believers who are laboring among them. Pray that God would open doors for the Gospel, prepare hearts to receive His Word, provide protection and resources for those serving, and raise up indigenous leaders who can disciple others.
But also pray for the people around you. Ask God to give you eyes to recognize those who are searching for Him and the courage to engage them with compassion and truth. You may never know how God can use one conversation, one act of kindness, one invitation, or one prayer to impact someone’s life.
There are people everywhere who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness. God is already working in their hearts, and He invites us to participate in what He is doing. Let us pray for the nations, pray for those who are reaching them, and pray for the people God has placed right outside our door.
