Thousands of children with disabilities in Uganda face significant barriers to receiving the care and support they need to live healthy, productive lives. According to UNICEF, more than 13% of Uganda’s 24 million children are living with a disability, yet only 18% have access to essential rehabilitation services. This leaves countless children without the specialized care that could dramatically improve their physical, cognitive, and emotional development.
The shortage of rehabilitation services is especially critical in western Uganda, where access to specialized therapy remains extremely limited. Although important progress has been made, the existing systems are still insufficient to meet the growing demand. Since its founding, the Kyaninga Child Development Center (KCDC) has provided comprehensive assessments and therapeutic interventions to more than 3,100 children. While this represents a significant investment in the lives of vulnerable children, it reaches less than one percent of the children with disabilities across the region, highlighting the urgent need for expanded services.
KCDC is currently the only center in western Uganda offering specialized therapy through a holistic, community-based rehabilitation program that is both accessible and affordable for families. Its multidisciplinary approach provides children with individualized care designed to maximize their physical, developmental, educational, and social potential while empowering parents and caregivers with the knowledge and resources needed to support their children’s progress.
The construction of a new Child Development Center will dramatically expand the ministry’s capacity to serve children and families throughout the region. The expanded facility will enable KCDC to provide intensive, specialized therapy services to an additional 3,000 children over the next three years. The new center will include improved accessibility features, multiple therapy and treatment rooms, a conference and training facility for healthcare professionals and caregivers, a special needs education center, and expanded administrative offices that will strengthen the overall delivery of services.
This investment will also increase KCDC’s therapeutic effectiveness by creating space to recruit additional therapists, allowing the center to provide approximately 1,800 more therapy sessions each year. These expanded services will ensure that more children receive timely interventions during the most critical stages of development, improving long-term outcomes and reducing the lifelong impact of disability.
The vision extends far beyond the walls of a new building. Over the next decade, more than 10,000 children with disabilities are expected to benefit from enhanced rehabilitation services that will improve their health, increase educational opportunities, foster greater independence, and enhance their overall quality of life. Equally important, these efforts will help reduce the stigma and discrimination often experienced by children with disabilities by promoting inclusion, dignity, and acceptance within their communities.
By investing in rehabilitation services today, we are investing in brighter futures for thousands of children and their families. Every therapy session, every trained caregiver, and every child empowered to reach his or her God-given potential represents a step toward building communities where every child is valued, included, and given the opportunity to thrive.
