Over half of the children in rural Mozambique suffer from chronic malnutrition, and the educational system is deeply impacted, with more than two-thirds of students dropping out before reaching the fifth grade. The COVID-19 pandemic has compounded the situation, pushing even more families into poverty and exacerbating both the hunger crisis and educational disruption. Malnutrition, in particular, remains a significant barrier to academic success, and the long-term consequences of poor nutrition can be devastating for children’s physical health and cognitive development. Without adequate nutrition, children struggle to concentrate in class, ultimately hindering their educational progress and future prospects.
To address these challenges, TEL International’s partner has launched a program to provide nutritious school lunches to 1,700 students across six primary schools in rural Mozambique. The project is designed to target communities where children face high rates of poverty and hunger, providing a practical solution to improve both their nutrition and educational outcomes. The school lunch program not only supports the health of children but also serves as an incentive for regular school attendance, which has traditionally been a significant challenge in these regions.
The program aims to offer more than just a meal. By providing nutritious, balanced lunches, the initiative helps ensure that children have the physical energy and cognitive strength needed to concentrate in class and fully engage in their studies. The program is also designed to support local farmers by purchasing fresh produce from them, providing an additional economic benefit to the community. This creates a cycle of support: children get the nutrition they need to thrive, while local farmers benefit from a stable market for their produce.
By offering nutritious meals in a school setting, the program directly addresses the immediate needs of children in rural Mozambique, ensuring they can grow and learn in a healthy environment. With a full belly and a chance to receive a complete education, these children are better positioned to break free from the cycle of poverty that has long plagued their communities. In the long term, this initiative aims to foster healthier, more educated children who are equipped to create brighter futures for themselves and contribute positively to the development of their communities.
