In Kenya, many women living in rural communities face extreme poverty and limited opportunities to provide for their families. Without access to education, vocational training, or sustainable employment, some women are vulnerable to exploitation and may feel forced to enter dehumanizing professions, including the sex trade, simply to provide food and basic necessities for their children.
TEL International is committed to breaking this cycle by empowering women with practical skills that can lead to sustainable, dignified employment. Through our vocational training program in Kenya, women from impoverished rural communities receive comprehensive training in sewing, tailoring, business practices, and healthy lifestyle choices. In addition to learning practical vocational skills, they are equipped with the confidence, knowledge, and entrepreneurial abilities needed to become self-sufficient, establish sustainable businesses, and create a more secure future for themselves and their families.
Participants live at the Nakuru facility at no cost while completing a 12-month vocational training program. During this time, they develop professional tailoring skills and gain the knowledge and confidence needed to establish and manage their own businesses.
Upon completing the program, each woman is equipped to launch a tailoring business and generate a sustainable income. This income can help provide food, education, clothing, healthcare, and other basic necessities for her family. More importantly, economic independence gives these women greater control over their future and helps protect their children from the devastating effects of poverty.
The program also helps keep children in school and reduces the economic pressures that can contribute to early and forced marriage, particularly among young girls. By investing in mothers, TEL International is also investing in the next generation.
Our goal extends beyond teaching women how to sew. We are helping them build livelihoods, restore dignity, strengthen families, and create a pathway toward lasting independence. Through vocational training and economic empowerment, these women can move from surviving poverty to building a better future for themselves and their children. By gaining practical skills, financial independence, and the confidence to become self-sufficient, they are better equipped to break the cycle of poverty, provide for their families, keep their children in school, and build stable, dignified, and sustainable lives for generations to come.
