It is easy to think of Jesus only as the compassionate and approachable expression of God’s love, while feeling uneasy whenever the subject of divine judgment is raised. Yet Scripture presents a fuller picture of God’s character. Throughout both the Old and New Testaments, God’s judgment is revealed as an essential expression of His holiness, righteousness, and justice.

Divine judgment is not reserved solely for nations that oppose God’s purposes or persecute His people. The Bible also records numerous occasions when God judged His own covenant people because of their disobedience, idolatry, and unfaithfulness. His discipline was never arbitrary but flowed from His perfect justice and His desire to call His people to repentance and restoration.

Understanding both God’s mercy and His judgment provides a balanced view of His character. The same God who extends grace through Jesus Christ is also the righteous Judge who holds every nation and every individual accountable. His judgments remind us that sin has consequences, while His mercy offers forgiveness and hope to all who turn to Him in faith.
