The Great Commission in the Digital Age

The Great Commission in the Digital Age

More than a century ago, reaching people in distant countries with the Gospel required missionaries to endure journeys lasting weeks or even months by ship. Two decades ago, international travel by airplane made it possible to reach distant mission fields in a matter of hours. Today, advances in technology have transformed global evangelism, allowing us to communicate with people around the world in seconds through the Internet. What once required extensive travel and significant resources can now begin with a computer, a smartphone, and a willingness to share the message of Jesus Christ.

The Internet has opened unprecedented opportunities for reaching people across geographical, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. Millions of people around the world use digital platforms daily to communicate, learn, and build relationships. From North America and Latin America to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, people are increasingly connected through websites, social media, video platforms, and messaging applications. This connectivity creates opportunities for Christians to share biblical teachings, answer questions about the Christian faith, and introduce people to the hope found in the Gospel.

Although many Christians think of missions as traveling to distant countries, the mission field is no longer limited to a physical location. It can be found right before us on our computers, tablets, and mobile phones. Through online conversations, Christian videos, digital Bible studies, social media posts, and virtual discipleship, believers can reach individuals who might never enter a church or have an opportunity to meet a missionary in person. The Internet also allows Christians to connect with people living in countries where traditional missionary activities may be restricted or difficult to conduct.

As followers of Christ, we must recognize that technology is more than a tool for entertainment, business, and personal communication; it can also be a powerful instrument for advancing God’s kingdom. While online evangelism cannot replace the importance of personal relationships, local churches, and in-person discipleship, it can extend their reach far beyond geographical boundaries. The Great Commission calls us to make disciples of all nations, and the digital world provides new opportunities to fulfill that calling. By using the Internet intentionally, prayerfully, and wisely, we can share the Gospel across borders and help bring the message of salvation to people around the world.
