TEL International and its partners are launching a transformative initiative to equip 100 Zambian women in the rural communities of Eastern Province with the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to become successful entrepreneurs. Through a comprehensive training program, participants will receive instruction in gender empowerment, sales and marketing, cash management, and essential business skills. In addition to this training, each woman will be provided with a $300 line of credit, enabling them to purchase energy-efficient products that they can sell within their local communities. This approach not only creates immediate income-generating opportunities but also addresses the critical need for access to affordable, clean energy in underserved areas.
Across Zambia, millions of women living in remote and impoverished communities face limited opportunities for economic advancement. Many are caught in a cycle of intergenerational poverty, often intensified by lack of education, restricted access to resources, and minimal participation in income-generating activities. In these settings, women frequently carry significant household responsibilities while lacking the means to improve their financial circumstances. Organizations like Kukula Solar recognize that empowering women economically is a key driver of sustainable community development.
Through this project, Kukula Solar will provide targeted training that goes beyond business fundamentals. By focusing on gender and empowerment, the program seeks to build self-confidence, leadership capacity, and a sense of agency among participants. Women will be encouraged not only to start and grow their own energy businesses but also to see themselves as capable decision-makers and leaders within their households and communities. The combination of practical skills and personal empowerment is designed to create lasting transformation.
The anticipated long-term impact of this initiative is significant. Participants are expected to experience an average increase of 50% in individual income, contributing to improved financial stability for their families. With 100% of the women engaged in income-generating activities, households will benefit from diversified and more reliable sources of income. Furthermore, as women gain confidence and visibility through their businesses, more will be inspired to take on leadership roles, fostering a cultural shift toward greater gender equality and community involvement.
Ultimately, this project represents a powerful step toward breaking the cycle of poverty. By investing in women—equipping them with skills, resources, and opportunity—TEL International and its partners are helping to build stronger families, more resilient communities, and a more inclusive and sustainable future for rural Zambia, while unlocking local economic potential, fostering entrepreneurship, and creating a ripple effect of generational change.
