O, Give Thanks Unto the Lord for He is Good.

O, Give Thanks Unto the Lord for He is Good.

Psalm 107: 1 – O, Give thanks unto the Lord for He is good.

Okay! We finally get to hear the psalmist out. Up to now, we have been parsing this line word by word leading up to the full thought this writer had in mind. O give thanks unto the Lord for He is good. So, let’s start there. He is good.

Notice that it is enough to give thanks to God simply because He is good. Goodness is His nature. It is His character. It is His behavior. It is His being. It is His essence. It is just the way He is! Now, pay close attention to what follows the psalmist’s exhortation for us to give thanks unto the Lord for He is good. In the King James Version, do you see that (:) colon? The colon means that the writer is not finished with his thought, otherwise, there would be a comma, a period or even and exclamation point. The colon means you are about to get a list! Keep reading the rest of the psalm for the list which supports the claim that God is good.

O give thanks unto the Lord for:

v. 1 – His mercy endures forever.
v. 2 – He has redeemed us.
v. 6 – He delivered us.
v. 9 – He satisfies us.
v. 13 – He saved us.
v. 16 – He has broken the gates of our bondage.
v. 20 – He healed us.
v. 25 – 29 – He stopped the storm.
v. 30 – He brings us to our destination.
v. 37 – He provides increase.
v. 41 – He delivers the poor.

All of this comes after this psalmist’s colon. What reasons to give thanks to God would come after your colon?
