Strengthen Your Brother

Strengthen Your Brother

And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” (Luke 22: 31-32)

Peter’s frequent outbursts and fits of temper proved that even though he walked with Jesus every day, he had not yet matured. Jesus knew this and deep down inside, Peter did too. This disciple’s lack of maturity could serve Satan well and it was indeed what the Adversary wanted. An immature Peter would be a hindrance to himself. An immature Peter would be in conflict with Christ. An immature Peter would be a lousy leader of disciples.

However, since Jesus foresaw the power of a fully mature Peter, He prayed for him that his faith would not fail and that he would someday reach his predestined level of maturity. At that time he would be able to heal people with his shadow. He would raise lame men to their feet. He would preach to the whole world out of one single window. He would lead the church through persecution to prominence.

The challenge that Jesus gives to Peter is: “When you finally get to maturity, reach back and strengthen your brother.” Mature Christians are not threatened by the growth and development of other Christians. They are invigorated by it and they do everything they can to facilitate it.
