What began in Genesis 37 as the fanciful, prideful and provocative dream of a teenager has been fulfilled. After the pit, after the prison, after the ascension to the palace, after playing with the fears of his brothers, Joseph stands tall as the Prime Minister of Egypt. As his dream predicted, his brothers found themselves bowing before him and begging for their lives at his feet.
We cannot leave Joseph without making a few comments on his great comeback.
1. It may take a while and some adversity, but what God has for you is for you and it will come true. Not even Joseph fully knew what his dream meant or would mean. Still, he stuck with God and, as he went, God revealed the dream itself and showered the blessing of the dream upon him and his family.
2. God allows some of the people who fought you on the dream to be alive along with you to see it fulfilled. The Lord could have easily allowed Joseph to prosper without him ever having to see his brother again. But, God navigated the circumstances of their lives such that a famine in their land drove them to find food in the only place that had food. That place was Egypt and the man in charge of the food was Joseph. They not only lived long enough to see the dream they fought come to fruition, they had to swallow their pride when they learned that the dream they tried to kill was the thing that would now keep them alive.
3. When we have a great comeback, we should not come back with vengeance, but accept our victory with humility and grace. Joseph’s brothers knew that after the way they had treated him, he had every right to have them executed. Instead, of having them killed, Joseph was able to put the whole thing in perspective and conclude: 20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. 21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. – Genesis 50: 20-21
His comeback was not only for him. He brought others back along with him. You can do the same.
