A Child Who Makes You Laugh

A Child Who Makes You Laugh

“6 And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me. 7 And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age.” – Genesis 21: 6-7

God promised Abraham that all of the nations of the earth would be blessed by his offspring which came through the lineage of his son Isaac. However, long before Isaac was a blessing to the nations, he was a blessing to Abraham and Sarah because he made them laugh.

Far too many are the parents who have a child who makes them cry. A child who makes them cry as they look out of the window wondering where he is. A child who makes them cry as she is carried away in hand cuffs and loaded in the back seat of a police car. A child who makes them cry as he dies an early death and is buried in a premature grave. A child who makes them cry from a disrespectful attitude and a fowl mouth.

Isaac made Sarah laugh so much that she literally named him laughter. Why did Isaac make Sarah laugh?

1. He made her laugh at him. Apparently, as is often the case with a baby, Isaac had no clue of the controversy he had been born into. He knew nothing of Hagar, Ishmael, nor his mother’s biological history. He was a happy go lucky child who enjoyed life and showed it with his own laughter. He was a joy because he was oblivious to the dysfunction around him and laughed himself!

2. He made her laugh at herself. When Sarah overheard the angel of the Lord tell Abraham that she would have a child at ninety years old, her first reaction was to laugh. You have to be honest. That is funny. Yet, it happened. Still, she could not believe it. Every time she thought about it, she laughed at herself.

3. He made her laughed with by other people. Isaac did not become a source of ridicule for Sarah. He was a source of encouragement to others. Notice how she says that when others hear about what happened to her, they will not laugh at her, but laugh with her. Others were not only happy for Sarah. They were encouraged to learn that if God could work a miracle for Sarah, He could do it for them.

4. He made her laugh at God. That God could give her a child at ninety made her grateful. That God did it made her laugh. The Lord not only moves in mysterious ways. He also moves in comical ways. If you have a child like Isaac, thank God for a child who enables you to laugh at him or her, laugh at yourself and even laugh at God.
