Give Liberian Children Healthcare, Education, Hope

60% of Liberians are illiterate. 14 years of civil war and the worst Ebola epidemic in history have devastated Liberia’s health and education sectors. The end of the war left a country in which 2 of every 5 children would not survive to their fifth birthday. In the wake of Ebola, there is just 1 clinician for every 1,000 people and the pharmacies are often empty. Most young people cannot read or write at their grade level, if at all, and few teachers have satisfactory skills.

TEL International invests in healthcare, education, and economic development for the most disadvantaged children. Through our partners we help to enroll children in school and provide afterschool tutoring focusing on reading skills. There is also a registered nurse on staff who conducts home visits, monitoring the children’s health and coordinating care with the local hospital. We also support economic development through the Women’s Weaving Cooperative, organized and led by guardians of children in the program.

The approach is holistic, and our interventions are integrated to ensure maximum impact. By training tutors, supporting the local health system, and providing microfinance and business skills training to the Women’s Weaving Cooperative, we are not only investing in individuals, but we are investing in a community’s future.
